HIPPOPOTAMUS
COORS LIGHT 'Big Mouth' commercial. Sergio Piera, director.
also- PANASONIC 'Hippo' commercial. Herb Ritts, director.
Specifications: Three 48" long, submersible mechanical puppets.
Materials: Silicone rubber, fibreglass, glass eyes and mechanisms.
Movements: Head turns, eyes and lids, mouth open wide, ear wiggle,
nostril snort and tail wag.
COORS- One of a few swamp jobs. At one point I found myself scuba diving in water with absolute zero visibility, grateful we'd designed the underwater platform hookups and mechanisms simple enough to hook up with our eyes shut.
PANASONIC- Our job here -puppeteering the head and mouth- was to follow the director's instructions to surprise Olivia Newton John and bounce this rubber Hippo head up against her head. She was a great sport about it, a trooper.
