FX106 BURNING MAN 2
'BROKEN ARROW' (Sony) 1995. John Woo, director.

Specifications: One highly realistic, painted life casting.
Materials: Ceramic investment slurry and sillica sand.

This effect called for a guy who had been shot and fell into a campfire to remain in the fire on camera for potentially hours of shooting. To make a really tough body, capable of withstanding such a long exposure to open flames, we brought our molds to Decker Art Foundry and had them cast ceramic investment slip into them (used to make molds in the fine art bronze casting process).

This process involves at least 7 coats of ceramic slurry, each sifted over with silica sand and steel crimp wire in order to build up a durable thickness of at least 3/8 to 1/2 inches. The resulting ceramic shell is designed to withstand thousands of degrees of heat over long exposures. The dummy was dressed and set in the campfire, rigged with propane gas lines and an electric igniter.
